He has been based in New Delhi for three years.
Where are India's great philanthropists? -some links : club dhaka; dialogue grameen; yunusworld

What does it say about India that its most active philanthropists right now are Bill Gates and Prince Charles?
There are, of course, many Indian businessmen who give money to charity. The Hindujas in Britain have given large sums, as has the Tata family in India. But nothing on any great scale or with any real ambition in India itself.
Bill Gates has focussed a great deal of his time and personal fortune in improving access to education, raising awareness and offering treatment for HIV/AIDS and encouraging agricultural development in India.
Last year Prince Charles invited some of India’s (and the world’s) richest men to launch the British Asian Trust to protect its environment, preserve historic buildings, and support the young unemployed.
The invitation list included Ratan Tata, Indian’s most enlightened industrialist, steel king Laxmi Mittal, property magnate K P Singh and India’s richest man and arguably the world’s best project manager, Mukesh Ambani. Their combined personal wealth easily topped £60 billion, but we’ve yet to see how deep they put their hands in the pockets or how much of their considerable talent and focus they gave.
Earlier this week, Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi asked the question that has been on mind since I came to India almost four years ago: where are its great philanthropists? How can a country with so much wealth, technical know-how and management talent give so little back to its own people?
At a gathering attended by Bill Gates, she said: “Yours is an example that we in India ought to emulate. We have in our country a long but uneven tradition of philanthropy.”
Referring to Sir Ratan Tata’s foundation to study poverty and campaign for its eradication in 1912, she said: “There are other examples of Foundations set up by various Indian business houses. Many of them command resources. But it must be said that we are yet to produce a truly visionary contemporary philanthropist….Today, when we can proudly affirm that there is almost nothing that anyone else is doing around the world that we in India cannot do, you have set us a challenge.”
It’s clearly not a question of money: India is the world’s second fastest growing economy and its tycoons are taking over the globe. As Sonia-ji points out, it’s about vision and focus, as the case of tiny, impoverished Bangladesh’s Grameen Bank highlights: the bank was formed to offer micro-loans to the poor to help them create and sustain their own businesses. Founder Muhammad Yunus’s original idea inspired NGOs around the world and won him the Nobel Prize.
The opportunities for an Indian Yunus could not be better: despite its extraordinary growth, India resembles Victorian Britain in its uneven development. But where enlightened Victorian capitalists funded reservoir and sanitation projects to eradicate water-borne diseases, and helped establish great charities like the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, India’s potential philanthropists remain ever-focussed on the bottom line rather than those at the bottom of its huge heap.
Instead of developing original ideas to unleash the potential of its hundreds of millions of untouchables and backward castes, many of its wealthiest figures are more often seen feathering their own spritual nests by donating large sums to Hindu temples.
I had been gloomy about this aspect of Hindu society until September 2007 when I was returning to Siliguri from visiting an abandoned tea plantation in Dooars, West Bengal, where the the employees and their families were starving. As my bus pulled up to the stop in torrential monsoon rain, I was met unexpectedly by three elderly gentlemen with unbrellas who startled me with the words:”Mr Nelson? We are disciples of S K Mitra and have come to show you our Ashram.”
Their Ashram was a place of wonder - a state of the art hospital offering free medical and dental treatment to the poor, a pre-natal clinic for expecting mothers, and adult education classes.
S K Mitra, their late guru, believed Hindus would only be reincarnated into a better life if they served the poor in this one, they explained.
As India takes on its growing responsibilities as the world’s first soft superpower, its billionaires must, as Sonia Gandhi and S K Mitra have suggested, look within as well as beyond.
Tags: Bill Gates, charity, Hindu, Hindujas, India, L.N Mittal, Mukesh Ambani, NSCPP, philanthropists, Prince Charles, Ratan Tata, Sonia Gandhi

In days when wall street has specialised in 100-lose economic games, it behoves future capitalism to map out hi-trust economic games - 100-win is the best I know of from my dad's work on entrepreneurship at The Economist 1950-1989, based on 300 years of Scot's struggles with going beyond imperialism (our nation was colonised by the English soon after the international bamking scam of 1700). Equally where profits are repeatedly generated I assume we can find a way iof agreeing some sliding scale that should be contributed either to your favourite grassroots organsiation in bangladesh or to a small list of other potential grassroots partners of future capitalism which should probably need at least 75 of members refendum to confirm

I am very happy if people will negotiate what other rules they would need to want to participate as well as to clarify where they want diferent contant at the mother webs. The main web system I use costs $35 a year per web so its not difficult to imagine that major cties will also want to set up their own branch web or of course a free blog - either of which we will happily linmk from the top of the mother web.

Obviously some of our constitution needs double checking with for example the 100000 bangladeshi's and other Gandhians who are the main practical exemplar of the values we seek to network worldwide so that the future sustains 7 billion brilliant jobs and goodwill multiplying across all women, children and even men.

We wish to learn from each city's most successful ways of mobilising and cross-cultural celebration, as well as metods for ensuring that any action network actually reaches to those in most desperate need of its service. This is one of the big lessons of bangladeshi experience -reiterated by every micro-system designer in bangladesh we have interviewed - once a networks starts empowering the entrepreneur inside it will never get deeper than the deepest needsholders it begins with. This is a lesson that many global NGOs seem never to have begun to grade.

chris macrae http://worldentrepreneur.net
washington dc inquiries desk usa 301 881 1655 info@worldcitizen.tv
y10000 at facebook http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=22045349892

Dr Yunus of Grameen and microcredit and Nobel peace 2006 is setting cities and citiens around the world an interesting challenge. If he is passing through your city would you be able to find 1000 people who all wanted to collaborate with each other as well as him in empowering a good global world instead of the bad one currently compoundingSynonyms for good are win-win-win, sustainable, empowering every community up, one where hi-trust people transparently win over low-trustSo 2 questions:if Yunus was passing through Africa cities, which do you think would produce the most collaborative impactsif you are a twin national

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2516276605 - eg living in a rich city but with family roots back in Africa - how ready is your big rich city to represent Africa interests when Yunus hosts his Forum 1000 there. My friends are particularly working on London and New York as 2 test cities; partly because a London University student spent the summer interning in Dhaka on this project. One intercity collaboration idea is collaboration cafe - see those we have already hosted and tell us at info@worldcitizen.tv if you want to replay one in your city or virtually http://worldcitizen.tv/_wsn/page4.html

Another collaboration idea is can we produce a good global idea to heroes, their projects and networks for humanity. Why do people all over the world know the top 10 sporstmen for 50 different sports but not top 10s for different vital issues of human sustainability? http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5475184122

http://worldcitizen.tv/_wsn/page2.html

But the best truth about collaboration knowledge cities http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%2Bknowledge+%2Bcollaboration+%2Bcity&btnG=Google+Search in the 5 years that I have been searching the peoples and communities that weave them is that if any city does a great job in turning round a beter Global with Yunus we can all learn from what it did and work out how to invite the 1000 most relevant citizens when Yunus passes your way. http://grameen.tv/

Ami Dar tells a great life chnaging moment story over here - an open community of 20000 world citizens where you can add your voice

the reply I added:

three cheers!

I prefer to start a day among strangers by grouping them into threes and giving each person 60 seconds to tell the other 2: the moment that most changed their life and how they have behaved differently since - perhaps that should be an idealist blog

empowering collaboration is definitely the globalisation's only other "system" chance wherever you the other methods (eg top-down only systems) have run out of space on a sustainability crisis; we haven't really tried how productive it could be; strange to say, many true media practitioners `assumed the internet was born free for that`

I have a white paper that I first presented in Delhi at a global reconciliation conference where our chief audeince guiest was the minsiter of public broadcasting - the coming wars beteen goodwill and badwill networks ; you can substitute collaboration for goodwill (and I am more than happy for anyone to edit the paper if they ever want to give a talk on it). However, absent of reformation, WEF has to be reviewed as potentially slipping out of relevance compared with meetings that did not even exist when the millennium began.

First there's the league of inspirational intiative meetings such as
Clinton Global , http://changeworld.net/_wsn/page5.html
microcreditsummit, http://microsummit.tv http://thegreenchildren.com
ted.com http://worldcitizen.tv/_wsn/page3.html
whose world citizen research rankings we maintain here http://sustainabilityclub.com/_wsn/page4.html

Second, this year it appears have become subject to a triple whammy of coincident events. Afirca's first ever world social forum; and India taking the lead with a sustaianbility forum that has bagged that most intriguing duo of climate 007: Nicholas Stern and Gordon Brown. Against which WEF's Lord Browne of BP and Blair look more like history's wisdom than the searching future's - unless this pairing is going to stand up and offer a converted view than any of they have previously mailed us.

Third unlike recent years when a key theme had been clarified and new data collected, and moreover a key speaker from another side of the world made extraordinary challenging contributions, WEF's pre-conference web this year sent me to sleep when I started reading the PCW 90-page knowledge concierge document (in transparency I must admit to potential bias: when I was employed by what became PCW in the early 1990s it was both the most boring and least entreprenurial career move on my vitae)

Nobody will be more delighted than us if WEF pulls a rabbit out of the magiician's tophat. Klaus is an a-list good sort, and whilst media coverage of economics was a subject entrepreneurially concerned with transparently investigating progress for all humanity WEF was the most exciting way to begin every New Year (apart from what each family chose to celebrate on January 1) We will be watching the WEF website http://www.weforum.org which is potentially a hidden jewel as a platform compared with all other meeting formats

Meanwhile, we've been frantically busy trying to sign up a quorum of world citizen future reporters from the World Social Forum in Kenya. What we don't care about is getting the scoops from the next 7 days. what we do care about is identifying the lasting comon actions troughout 2007 and how they connect with other extraordinary events being celebrated later in 007 both:
in Africa such as http://www.ted.com/tedglobal2007/
in the 5 years Passports to Sustainability http://passports.jp being launched as a round the world countdown to London's Olympic year with the goal of persuading the BBC that sustain ability's league heroes demand every bit as much hourly programming of the leading public broadcaster and world service channel as sports. After all's said and done, if we play any more inconvenient games with Truth on climate or the jigsaws of peace there will be no sports for future generations

Should you wish to keep linked in to the very occasional future events preview our networks will be issuing, please go and register at http://groups.google.com/group/maclink/topics?lnk=li&hl=en

Chris Macrae, info@worldcitizen.tv

May I offer you a quick tour around questions this picture represents for me and those networkers I feel most concern for and affinity with. We can only put it this way because now we are half-way through 1984-2024 we are far further behind where we could be on such revolutions as climate, clean energy, health, media, education for all children and cross-culturally, ending systemic corruption and its extreme consequences such as poverty, war, loss of safety of all of us .

Reviewing the 16 DVDs on the World Series of Social Entrepreneur Champions
(Series sponsors include Ashoka Skoll Changemakers - profiles debated at Calcutta and other Club of City and advocates of help BBC governors to stop being afraid of covering social entrepreneurs - their programmes matter more to kids futures than spectator sports do)
DVD 1 GRAJEW BEYOND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

I started with the Grajew dvd "Beyond Corporate Social Responsibility" since he's always been one of the greats whom I have found it harder to get stuff on because I don't speak Portuguese. I love this DVD because this guy has done what some CEOs -and sustainability investment funds - have said is necessary but few have so simply done. Namely while goodwill is wrongly or non-transparently audited, social responsibility puts an individual corporation at a cost disadvantage. What is needed is sector social responsibility, which if achieved is to nobody's disadvantage and the advantage of those who help pioneer its lead. This is what Grajew clearly did first with Brazil's toy industry - his origins are being in the toy sector, then agreeing to be the head of the main toy industry association, convening meetings until sufficient companies in the industry agreed they’d adopt a policy of not sourcing toys that involved child labour exploitation. The stories he tells are so straightforward I could well believe any CEO who cares could gain enormously from seeing this dvd; I wish it could be mass produced and given away with a copy of The Economist or some such mass channel to leaders. At http://er100.blogspot.com we chronicle my family and fellow Scots beliefs that the 1840s founder of The Economist (James Wilson) was one of the world champion social entrepreneurs of the 19th Century - anyway it was his inspiration that encouraged my father's entrepreneurial revolution trilogy between 1976-1984 where needs for social entrepreneurs were forecast if this 21st century is to become mankind's most civilised and best for all people, instead of its worst. It's interesting that Bill Drayton was the only one in the world to pick this idea up all that long ago so of course I am biased towards believing any networks he connects into are more likely to change the world than any other person I am aware of.

Grajew has since gone on to involve a third by turnover of all Brazil's business in responsibility programs. I'd love to know if he has converted other whole sectors (still haven't finished DVD). I can also imagine that if a nation gets such a critical mass of companies believing in responsibility it becomes simpler to be an advocate of responsibility as a market advantage even if the whole sector doesn’t come with you.

A question I would love to ask is does anyone know of any sector anywhere outside Brazil that has adopted sector responsibility regarding one of its sector deepest responsibilities (ie externality) or even a leader of a large business who is trying to form such a sector collaboration.
C.M.Macrae.72@cantab.net

Survey of Shareholders of The Economist

I am piloting this around questions like these

Is the purpose of economics to compound better lives for all people or a few powers that be? Do they have a specific goal or vision for economics over the next decade? Do they agree that the 1840s founder (James Wilson) of The Economist was a 19th C social entrepreneur world champion? The game is to have got 30 gravity pursuits of social entrepreneur world champions into the public consciousness by 2012 as much as the top 30 sports.

All we need is love and courage to cheerlead cross-cultural creativity's waves:

The Livingstone has got us off to a great start; he has declared there will be no sporting Olympics in London in 2012 unless they are carbon free - turn up the heat on every politician since only photosynthesis innovations can produce clean energy of that sustainability magnitude. Make sure all those who host Al Gore events debrief him as the clock to 2012 counts down

The lessons to be learnt from Make Poverty History from pop stars down can be an epiphany if University of Stars and the BBC turn their minds to the greater transparencies (eg end all country corruptions) needed if Make Poverty History is to be a reality network not just an image-making one

So that's 28 more gravity pursuits we need to celebrate around social entrepreneurs with as much gusto as the 20th Century hailed sporting stars

We are reminded of one Harrison Owen story I should tell because open spacing education is a social entrepreneur pursuit every family can stand up for whereas we cannot all help on the ground with projects in Africa or in the roofs that algae use to convert the sunshine into cleansing energy banks.

He was studying to be a priest around the Washington Dc area. It was a time when Martin Luther King was having a dream. Harrison can't recall quite how it happened but he was standing in a civil rights field in a crowd of African Americans - one tall lanky white man. The police were beginning to charge on the crowd and Harrison was feeling quite scared. That is until a 7 year old black girl came up to him - and said Mister will you hold my hand

Since that day, Harrison gave up the priesthood to the chagrin of most of his family. And is one of the handfuls of people who most interconnects conflict resolution facilitators around the world. Their networks criss-cross all religions that believe in golden rules of reciprocity such as so unto another what you want done unto you. They also connect mathematically - if Einstein is correct here at http://clubofdc.blogspot.com - to Gandhi as the greatest inventor of peaceful social entrepreneurial revolution that 144 years of The Economist's coverage of this most productive of all professions.

If some of this post makes sense to you, why not re-edit the parts you like and send it to the board of Governors of the BBC, and should you wish Tony Blair or another politician well with their legacy why not copy them in to. We the British people, not any of our political representatives own the BBC. We have invested way over 50 billion pounds in this corporation. On a personal note to all scots- may I ask whether you feel the inventor of television would feel proud of a television where every big debate is framed one dimensionally around short-term left and right rivals or whomever is looking fore a job with big business if the party does not turn out Trumps for their apprenticeship to network power.

It is high noon for the BBC with its 10 year licence determined by and for the people in the year of 2o06. Please could our world service be one of British Character we can feel both pride and humility in searching for. Please free your journalists for humanity to take a fearless lead in realising this open source script from 1984 , so that trust across peoples everywhere begins to flow through every documentary inquiry that has anything to do with world peace or nightly newscast on poverty's challenges through 2012 - and through these communications help the British to get to know 30 gravity pursuits of Social Entrepreneurs with as much joy and attention as the 30 sports it spend most public licence fees on. Hey when Brits helped to invent most of these sports we surely never intended they would take over from greater British realities of world service, through believing in CommonWealth principles and our Queen's higher order right to ask us as she did in her end of 2005 broadcast to unite in preventing globalisation from turning humanity on itself.

For the same of deeper democracy blossoming and connecting every coordinate on earth, you can also play a jigsaw mapping game aimed at sustaining 2 million global villages. Here's part of my family's tree which may open up some useful connections- what connections could your family tree or that of your peer networks open source. If you can make a "peer or family tree" picture why don't we play the mixed networking games of swap and snap. If we are going to turn around globalisation’s exponentials sustainably in time, we are all going to have to work with whatever grassroots community contexts up we can help each other navigate. No lead is too small as long as it is one you intend to gravitate transparently around as part of you lifelong learning mission. We need to help change children's education now so that the core human rights of freedom and happiness have a chance to breathe nature's clean waters, airs and energies everyone human beings sing her praises. Let's all turn up the courage through every family in the land and into wherever
China is at the top of the agenda

Anti-poverty group Actionaid has just released a report to coincide with the WEF start, accusing corporate lobbyists of having "an undue influence on the current global trade talks".

And in a way Davos is indeed the perfect place to lobby, whether for a good cause or your country.

India is making Davos the focus of its new "India everywhere" campaign, with a huge delegation of top government officials and business leaders.

Others are betting on the powers of jazz.

The state of Louisiana has invited to a "Bring back New Orleans" party, hoping to persuade investors to return to the hurricane-battered region.

Many of the people that Louisiana needs to persuade will be among the white badge holders in Davos.

For 30 years now we have been debating peoples economics scripts which grew out of my dad's 1976 survey in The Economist "Entrepreneurial Revolution". How can we help your city or country bring debates on integrating economic diversity to a global stage

Some emerging cataloguing areas are listed below. But most of all we look forward to any ideas from your citizens or netizens on how we could all do this. It would be particularly timely if we could discuss this before Delhi hosts the 2007 centenary of Gandhi be the change and Gandhian community-sustaining economics

people's economics perspectives, and 30th birthday party of entrepreneurial revolution scripts of our futures
why and how major cities can take a lead in harmonising economic exchanges across 2 million global villages 1 2

the 21 compound revolutions to global market sectors humanity needs to stimulate by 2010

changing brand and Knowledge management to be people relationship centred and hi-trust valued

changing to transparent maps of organisational governance and sustainability investment

Because of such factors as the commercial dominance over media in the USA, the chance for American people to get outside views of the world is much harder than people who enjoy a vibrant public sector broadcasting system can imagine. Let's use this thread to start cataloguing where the US people can choose to see outside views, as well as note any particularly relating to India. Even CNN shown in USA has different editorial selections than CNN International - guided it has been reported by such scheduling instructions as don't show a controversial debate (eg questioning patriotic rights and wrongs) which might cause American viewers to switch channels.

On US tv, there seems to me to be one leadership interviewer to look at first for those who may wish to interconnect local views arpound the world in an attempt to harmonise mutual understanding. This is because Charlie is a veteran of the media with a one of a kind way to whom he interviews and which types of leaders want to be in open conversation with him. There's also a free online discussion board of his interviews, and most can be repurchased from google at 1 US dollar
http://boards.charlierose.com/board/forum.asp?fi=24

Regarding documentary films, Robert Redford's sundance festival which starts today for most of January is the main once a year place for world documentaries to be premiered. (If anyone was at the first BetheChange, it coincided with the mother of all systems debate which Steve attended in the USA run by Ackoff with people like Meg Wheatley also joining in. I did encourage the leaders of both conferences to share their forward projects though I think most of the links went missing and I did not know that Colin Morley who was my linkup both www.BetheChange.org.uk and joint claborator in the future of the sustainability investment industry was going to have so little time left. This paper which Steve recommended to me on Ackoff's view echoes Einstein's (and so gandhi's) of how ever harder it will be for mankind to transform out of the global system that's chaining us http://www.acasa.upenn.edu/RLAConfPaper.pdf together with Ray Anderson's work, its about the only US school of thinking (as opposed to some schools of practice) worth adding to the world libray of gandhi.edu (sustainability mba that India is losely connecting around the 55 year research project of Cambridge postgraduate economist and Prime Minister Singh - how do we ensure we never let national economics compound an underclass anywhere if you want a networked world to survive)

: Thanks for commenting on my HuffPost blog > I wonder when was the last time organisations got more responsible for the> truth the bigger they got. In a future history I co-authored in 1984 with my> dad (a lead writer at The Economist) for 30 years, we had a very optimistic> and a very pessimistic scenario of what a globally networked world would> compound (similar I guess to Fuller's Final Exam Logic). We argued if goodwill> was to prevail that by 2010 we needed to see how the networking world (and a> new peoples economics) was mapping transparently around 2 million global> villages. One of the great congresses for making that happen is being hosted> in Delhi next year to mark a centenary of Gandhi, one of whose core studies> was how to support truth-testing communally. Hope to see some of you there :> http://clubofvillage.blogspot.com & 30 years of future history scripting> debates at http://entrepreneurialrevolution.blogspot.com> > chris macrae wcbn007@easynet.co.uk
Great comment, Chris! Thanks! I particularly appreciate the connectionsyou made to Bucky and Gandhi's work. The centenary of Gandhi...sounds likean important place to be!

Japan & Australia
my friend in Japan is Modjtaba Sadria (hattori) who is the only person & cross-cultural researcher I know who is fluent in Cinese, Japanese, English, Iranian and French; he is also close to paul Komesaroff at www.globalreconciliationnetwork.org the meta-network (losely linking 4 nobel peace laureates, 200 NGos and experience-practical people) that does more than any other medical or yout connecting one to recocile conflicts and pick up communities after devastating disasters. Modjtaba also has a fascinating dialogue on learning slavery - the means by which national governments now only sponsor economics or other socila research into the power of the big at most academia since many politicians are look to retire into sinecures with big business. Ask my dad: when was the last democracy governemt that sought to faciliate what the people wanted not power over them- answer none in his lifetime with the exception of Germany & Japan after losing World war 2- oh what a lovely system of globalsiation we will exponetially compound unless the people networks unite openly and quicklyhttp://exponentials.blogspot.com
Chris Macrae wcbn007@easynet.co.ukhttp://clubofvillage.blogspot.com http://clubofdelhi.blogspot.com http://clubofchina.blogspot.com

India's Gifts to the World

My first visit to India was to Bombay (as it was still mapped) in 1984; my most recent to New Delhi speaking and being openly questioned at the annual gathering of Global Reconciliation Network (December 04) co-hosted by the Indira Gandhi National Centre of Cultutres (a stone's throw from India's parliament) and Bhashra Ingidenous and Nomadic people's hub of inquiries.

I have always been amazed by the love of Indians for Brits. On perhaps my first walk in a Bombay street, an elderly man hobbled up to me- are you from England: I hear how you are ruled by an Iron maiden; how lucky we are to be in India.

The rest of this is a longer thread than bloggers are supposed to put in one piece. Its on a big topic the future ofn the world or India or Britain. We are all interlinked. Oddly what India and Britain colaborate on in the next 5 years may start to do more or less for humanity than any international colaboration this century. How come? Our 2 nations have invested more than any other in public broadcasting. We can inquire about the people stories all over the globe as an open world service. In Britain it is not Tony Bliar but all Britons who have invested well over 50 billion doalrs during my lifetime in the British Brioadcasting Corporation. The BBC needs a joint ventire with DD to start questioning every deep targedy of humanity and having braodcast this link it to a google, ebay or others pace where peoples all over the world can chip in their questions, or experimental projects ion harmonising multicultural solutions. We also have 2 courageous leadeship teams now- Sonia gandhis & Prime Minister Singh who have for at least half a century studied the ecopnomics and community-up networeking dynamics why nations of the 21st C cannot afford compounding undercalsses nor global corporations that externalise Bhopals; and back in London around St James' a queen who uses her end of year tv report to ask that Britains and friend sof Britains everywhere ask: Is (globalisation as currently spinning causing) humanity to turn on itself

We need to know that The American analysis of Porter and others on the comeptitive advantage of nations is not just old hat but terrifyingly wrong for a 21st C networking world where inclusivity (collaboration of nations and all interlocal cultures up) is vital. We need a sustainability MBA to be openly written across the internet as a systemically opposite curriculum than almost everything USA business schools tach. Gandhi.edu would be a superb web name for that as would starting this openly up at Delhi's 2007 centenary for all people who practise Gamnhi type faciliation of communities and cultures

so here's the longer script, written in part to see if there are any Americans out there who might want to collaborate with India and Britain on some urgent 5 year projects our senior economist started to vision back in 1984 and which need to be in unstoppable network motion by 2010

THE COMPETITIVE DISADVANTAGE OF NATIONS
As this thread is about the future shock of revolutions - a topic grown men and economists have been known to stamp their feet on like spoilt children - let us begin the 1980s. 26 years ago Harrison Owen evolved the first of what became 50000 open spaces to date, facilitated in nearly 100 countries by up to 1000 alumni. There is no simpler method of innovation if your system map of human communications dialogues revolves around getting all involved people simultaneously through a conflict barrier. (Some of these disciplinary tribes will be sabotaging if not openly at war with each other the more critical the innovation challenge has become to the top or survival of the firm - so bring humanity out into the open so they can all get back to connecting to find the higher order resolution than their separate views will ever lead to alone, how ever preciously timesheeted some professions have made themselves. Innovation is as weak as your most humanly detiled missing link; this is almost always interdisciplinary!)

Early on -perhaps space trial 200- Harrison had lunch with the top person of an USA association dedicated to management education. After listening to how open space invites all workers concerned with a revolutionary innovation to participate in meeting, debating, co-organising experiments, being the open future network which will resolve the context's value multiplying future exponential; the top man stood up and said: Harrison if you are correct then 95% of what academic specialities of management teach will be wrong. His PA stood up and said 99%; they stomped out; and to this day their asociation is a sworn enemy of letting higher education open space in MBA curricula. They have done things such as write learned papers over the last 20 years so that open space and living the brand is excluded from brand valuation or innovation or knowledge networking. They have teamed up with every major profession that finds it more lucrative to separate its own business case than connect with other professions. More lucrative to peddle a standard rather than admit organisational leadership needs be deeply organic, contextual, beyond what the profession's standard knows deeply about sustaining.

Today, well over 90% of what you might read in Porter's Competitive advantage of nations - or any economic treatise that puts competitive boundarising alone (aka economic externalising) as more vital than collaborations - is wrong, and compounding exponentially greater wrong. Wrong mathematically; wrong ethically; wrong in terms of financial sustainabiliy -ie not multiplying volatility's risks of bubbling up and down; wrong in terms of any relationship dynamic humans value beyond the last quarter's monetary take; wrong for the future of your kids, the sustainability of nature. How wrong does the boundarised scientific mind need to become before we people celebrate deep voices who question it, who provide spaces for communities to declare their grassroots needs however blind the top is to the fact that eg 10% of folk in New Orleans can't drive cars, so a washington DC evacuation plan is as useless as a gaggle of Arabian horses as a new Orleans evacuation plan unless you permit local voices to openly question it ahead of its real-time need. Why are some top funders of scientists so vain that they don't want to include local-up views- perhaps because by including diversity, there would be less money in patenting one fit all standard approaches. Perhaps because instead of soundbiting, the true academic leader would want to promote open questions for a community to resolve as much as handing answers on a plate. perhaps because this would also show that teaching our kids to always prepare for the next standards exam is an abortion of context deep learning , and a sacrilege to using email to co-mentor each other, and to love crossing cultures . Perhaps because (I leave you - dear peoples communicator - to complete the next sentence now you are into the cluetrain of the peoples communications revolution)

This leads us on to the following script on The Collaboartive Advantage of Nations in a Networking age. My intent at wcbn007@easynet.co.uk is to connect with the one percent of people who may read this and want to openly explore this new whole system maths of mapmaking, not get into quarrels with the 99% of professionals who love separating competition. Your past and even your now can do very well from spearation, but as forecast since 1984 our species won't exist in 100 years (give or take a generation) unless at least some places go beyond competition between nations and towards colaboration between all 6 billion beings. Mathemticians might first go back to reading how John von Neumann wanted to see collaborative uses of computing. He would have applauded the 5 year get us to the moon project as the most collaborative use of brain, emotion and machine power ever teamed. Every year since he must have rolled in his grave about how few other meta-projects have ben realised within nations. The tragedy of "humanity turning" today is by not having practised within nation collaborations around greatest innovation projects over the last 2 decades, jumping BEYOND to inter-nation collaboration projects of such 5-year urgency as photosynthetic energy will require far more courage and transparent revolutionary zeal than most national leaders (Queen Elizabeth and India's leadership accepting) have been conditioned by the last generation of left versus right politics to even consider as possible to mediate.

So read me only if you are prepared to agree every one of us has made mistakes in permitting our mnations and subcultures to get so isolated, so afraid of each other, with so little space where citizens can meet to draw up the bigest 5 year projects, and ask their leaders to help facilitate their communications realities, through open spaces etc

Ranking the competitive disadvantage of nations in a Flat World
Links 6 hi-tech interviewees of 6 January and Friedman

This league table can be described in various equivalent ways including the collaborative advantage of nations in a networking age

The ranking we seek to value is whether a nation’s economy is exponentially up-tilting or down-tilting all its societies’ futures

Here is a first guide to some early estimates and qualification of assumptions. As the input data needed to make these rankings is concerned with the deep conflict-free contextual dynamics required for collaborative networking, anyone who has a deep truth testimony to include in our maps can help change the ranking. However broadly speaking national league tables are emerging like this. They are based on the forward value multipliers of whether an economy is on an upcurve or downcurve, and primarily two upcurve qualities: speed of spin and cooperative sustainability

Among big economies: China is on the fastest upcurve, India on the steadiest most diversely and sustainably cooperative

There are city-based economies like Singapore that are probably ahead of either China or India on both curves but at the smaller scale. Countries that may do unexpectedly well compared with backward valuation indicators include:
Nordica countries
Australia
Canada as long as it never gets invaded

EU countries are mostly on slow downcurves that are change-able as long as countries are able to make deeper contextual decisions on future exponentials than Brussels ideal of an united constitution permits.

What of USA? About 10 luminaries at the top of business and academia have go on record on public television in the last few months saying they have widespread feedback that American people feel they are on an inter-generational downturn. They are correct unless economics of exponentials maths is understood pretty fast for 5-year projects the world needs most.

Urgent 5-year collaboration meta-projects include
Green Energy
Intercommunity safety- ability to collaborate in response to natural flows that no national borders
Microfinance to the most disconnected especially women’s networks in places with poorest infrastructures or most corrupted governances
Etc

If USA does not evolve the collaborative network competences and transparencies with which other countries lead in collaboration in 5 year meta-projects , one of 2 things is statistically likely to happen by 2025. The united nation will be on one of the steeper downward exponentials of any once great 20th Century economy. Regions will have split up into a disunited states in terms of economics and governance.

It may be important for you to appreciate that all of us can integrate an open source maths of mapmaking future exponentials all of whose dynamically connecting pieces are known. This mathematics seeks to unite over applied 100 disciplines of management and performance measurement including different branches of economics that have been made academically separate and whose assumption were boundarised by scientific analysis that pre-existed networking realities of system*system interactivity. Moreover, it is only by configuring these at contextual levels and then auditing truth or conflict-free relationship patterns that the future exponentials become transparent.

It is also important to understand that wherever citizens wish to raise a debate that transforms systemic views of all measurement and constitutional professions until they connect as seamlessly as networks themselves do. In providing first sightings of national rankings, we are not suggesting individual leaders have been primary causes of company’s forwards exponentials. Rather the entirety of the mapping system. Transparent governance in an open networking age cannot be sustained by 20th Century top-down modes of governance isolated from deeper and faster changing interactions than can be statically planned or known.

The predictions implied above do not have access to all the future truth-testing inputs which could be gathered and configured. That is the next task for democracies or organisations whose leaders or citizen networks who are transparent and goodwilled enough to stare potential conflicts in the face and systemically resolve them in time.

Where did this come form. It integrates journalist and inquiry molecules that future historians have been using for over 40 years- in my Dad’s case at The Economist to forecast the future of Japan in 1962, and various entrepreneurial revolutions in a series of surveys whose origin celebrates its 30th birthday this year. Similar logics appear in all of Drucker’s work. Modern day analysts of networking’s future exponentials include Friedman and Tapcott, Allee and some of the inquisitors of the Unseen Wealth inquiry done in 2000 out of Brookings & Georgetown Law School.

Personal Resources:
Do you have a transparency region or other context that you want to map? If so mail me explaining why the context matters you and what transparency inputs you and your networks can access for making a first stage map

General resources include:
http://exponentials.blogspot.com/
http://therebeleconomist.blogspot.com/
http://simpol.blogspot.com/
http://ecosaintjames.blogspot.com
http://clubofvillage.blogspot.com
http://osoflondon.blogspot.com http://futureoflondon.blogspot.com
http://clubofamerica.blogspot.com http://clubofdc.blogspot.com
http://clubofdelhi.blogspot.com
http://entrepreneurialrevolution.blogspot.com

Charlie Rose Debates on PBS TV - Green is Next Red, White &amp;amp; Blue; Competitive Disadvantage of Nation, China, Karen , Lazard, Moores 2nd Laws, Mirror Mirror Least Green Corporation of All

Happy New Year Club of Village 2.0 & Welcome back to the land of the living. Look what research area governement funds go into , and more interestingly what can never get funded. Look what modes of etaching go on in our schools, and more interesting what questioning modes of learning inquiry are not permiited becasue people have to cram and exam facts, even if these do not connect wholly real experuiences of anyone's future. To end my Westren hemisphere year, I am starting a volley of mails on what Knowledge Management should never be if you want to celebrate the 30th birthday of my father's Entrepreneurial Revolution in The Economist or the 22 year learning curve of our future histories of people being networked. Or turn from ideas to 30000 project action micronetworks and the global villages they aim to transparently connect.

Meanwhile an exercise I have been developing this year which I wish I had had ready when I was speaking in Delhi last year. Tell me at wcbn007@easynet.co.uk up to 5 people you chhose for being better for humanity than we people have any right to expect given the sector areas they come from. OK, this is an exercise that may reveal our mutual ignorances from which we first elarn but (and remember you probably know India deeper than I do) then 5 five for the future of India currently are:

1 Prime Minister Singh- Nomination Singh went to Cambridge about 3 years after my father; learnt from the same good & bad economics yteachers; made his special lifelong learning curve why it is neither good for the world nor economic for nations to compound underclases. Given the system, I wouldnt swap Singh for any other Prime Minster if I had a vote. I also believe that his timing when previusly finance minister in opening up India's economy was brilliant for the netwoerking age where collaboration with goodwill partners is the new (value multiplying) competition, and I imagine the only pathway to economics of abundance, as opposed to economics of scarcity

2 Sonia Gandhi - who keeps on amazing me with acts of transparency, and giving bureucrats hard time who are not transparent

3,4 The senior civil servamnt incharge of repartaion of Bhopal and the Minister of Braidcasting & Info Technology who were respectively chied host of the GRN event where I made my small contribution.

5 Ashis Nandi who keeps all societies questioning what peace and exponentials of economics & sustainability are our governments really strategizing for our children's future

My 2 nominations of open learning saints of India are Gandi & Theresa, as previously mentioned Indioa seems to be the only country with a top 5 open learning saint from both sexes.

Please share with us events around India of 2005 most worth celebrating

some examples, I hear that Goa is one of two principal hubs of the People's World Reported in our October DeathofDistance newsfeed to Entrepreneurial Revolutionaries everywhere our 30th birthday parties are being blogged in 2006 ; this folows up Goa being the world congress of open space conflict resolution facilitators in 2004

I love the sound of two extraordinary achievements at Lucknow: the world's largest monetsorri school and the annual chief justice meeting now in its 6th running

Intercitizens: In our spirit of reciprocation, over in London, we nominate 2005's number 1 event to celebrate as the Queen's Speech because she asked every Briton and evey being to adopt this inquisitive mission for 2006: Is Humanity turning against itself? I don't know, but I am guided by this train of clues. Will be interested to hear from anyone who clicks through this journey's first steps

Until you inform me better, my number 1 most loved pattern rule of conflict resolution: the greatest value multiplying act of leadership is to help peoples harmonise what prior wisdom has called warring opposites: practice conversation starters such as: how do we double loop simplicity and complexity as one higher order harmony? ; or how do we map chaos and nature as sustainability's future exponentials our systems live or die with?

Another line of inquiry: although it gets me into big time trouble with bureaucrats at The European Union (a closed space if any there was one), I do not believe we can get far in enabling every side to pass through a corrupted conflict barrier without knowing some of the same views of why emotional energies matter more to productivity and demands than all the numbers in an accounants book. An Inquiry into this mission impossible embraks locally here.

In the west, the world's most popular future historian is Thomas friedma. When asked why his book "The World is Flat" is selling 1.3 million copies, he says: I think that simolutaneously most people in the West have lost confidence that they are developing a better future for their kids, whereas previously in America this seemed so certain.

Thomas first discovered the idea for this book by visiting Infosys in Bangalore. There's more of how he was inspired to find that young Americans are going to infosys for work experience, recognising that their generation will need to colaborate as much as compete. This is a new value in the USA - so where better to learn this than in the USA. Now if people at the top of the USA could learn this too, then they should start seeing Green as the new Red, White and Blue

Postcard to Delhi, a year after Global Reconciliation Network04

GRN, a meta-network coordinated by Australian Professor of Medicine and Ethics Paul Komesaroff forms annual gatherings London (o3), Delhi (04), Sarajevo (o5), Palestine-Israel(06)

My visit to Delhi was the first time in nearly 20 years, and I hope never to leave it so long again, especially as at GRN's conference announcement was made of a worldwide centenary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi in 2007.

India is the most remarkable of the handful of countries that have been on a successful exponential over the last 2 decades because it is by far the most collaborative, multicultured space on earth- and an antidote to uniformity of globalisation which our 1984 forecasts suggested a networked world must guard against. Humanity needs in our view to network around 2 million global viallge communities not one top down Orwellian power.

We celebrate with every opinioin leader around the world who calls India a First Class model. My dad studied economics at cambridge University about 4 years before Prime Minister Singh, and there's no deeper voice in global economics today thatn Singh's lifetime study of why the world can no longer afford any nation that compounds underclasses be these within its geographical borders or on thye other side of the globe through the vicious compound impacts of the economics of externalities. It was honotr to be GRN, whose 2 local hosts were:

the Chair of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Culture, also one of India's senior civil servants who has spent the last 20 years helping with reparation of Bhopal -one of the greatest victims of economics of externalities the world can map

the Chair of Bhasha research into the rights of Nomads

These and many other local reconciliation issues are vividly implanted on my mind, more alive now than when I first witnessed them a year ago. We must be their change.

Internationally GRN04 was also an eyeopenr to many other deeply human networking needs:
support for communities decimated by HIV, where Africa has ben particularly hit

The extraordinary cross-cultural bridging work that youth movements started by Paul's daughter are percolating as you can see from the write-up below

In the last 12 months, nature and man have continued to display teriifying imnpacts making ot necessary for those who believe in reconciliation and humanity to redouble our efforts. In Paul's case he led an expert visit to Tsunami-afflicted regions in India and Sri Lanka, details of which I will also try to add.

Delhi and London have both suffered terror attacks. In London, we accept this as a test of whether any multicultural city has a future. I have to look at it that way in nmemory of a close friend and arguably number 1 reconcilaition agent around London- Colin Morley lost in 7/7's Underground bombing. My own presentation in Delhi was titled the coming wars between goodwill and badwill networks. As we map 1 2 the future's exponentials, it is time for peoples everywhere to actively and simultaneously stand up for the goodwill, or see badwill wave over all of us. We need to see project30000 up and running by 2010, an idea that we firsttijmelined as the number 1 intercitizen challenge of this decade back in 1984. We are behind the timeline, but being in Delhi has rekindled every energy drive I can muster towards this realisation.

2006 is the 30th anniversary of my father's Entrepreneurial Revolution survey in The Economist; we invite everyone who believes in reconciliation to co-script with us why Reconciliation preneurs are now the most valuable facilitators in the world. Peoples around the world should not demand advances in any industry sectors unless they can help bring communal sustainbility, inter-communal harmony, and indeed a world of peaceful chnage befitting next year's centenary of the greatest 20th C leaders humankind has been honored to see among Women's Mother's Theresa's and men's Mahatma Gandhi.

Extract from Pugwash Youth Peace Conference paper 2005, Hiroshima
by Frida Komesaroff & Victoria Baldwin

The struggle for peace requires community based
action in support of reconciliation at both the local
and global levels

...Reconciliation only has meaning, however, if it is realised at the local level where
individuals come together in face to face interactions. We have therefore been involved in
establishing and supporting groups and individuals active in a variety or areas, including
health care, indigenous issues and youth.

Locally based initiatives can operate on many levels and make use of a wide range of
possible forms of social and cultural action. For example, these may include:
Community based discussions around global and local reconciliation. These
discussions address: the causes and consequences of war, violent conflict and
terrorism, and alternatives to it; strategies to rebuild the structures of the organisations
and processes devoted to establishing and maintaining peace; the nature and
importance of health; and the sources of, and different perspectives on, ethics and
human values.
Cultural and artistic exchanges between and within communities, regions and nations
and programs supporting exchanges of scholars between different countries and to
allow children of school age to visit and experience cultures different from their own
and to bring together young people from around the world to facilitate increasing
contacts, dialogues, and understanding
Practical initiatives to support action around areas of common interest to
participating members, including in the field of health and welfare, where the
challenge of developing culturally appropriate ways to confront disease and its
effects provides an opportunity to build new communities and to empower people
traditionally excluded from important decision making processes.

“Global Youth” (GloYo) is a branch of the Global Reconciliation Network. It is being
devised by a group of young people concerned at the lack of public space available for
them to express, develop and contribute their perspectives on the possibilities for crosscultural dialogues. GY aims to unite young people of all cultures and backgrounds by focusing on positive energies, freedom of expression and the appreciation of the
expression of others through the sharing of practices, cultural experience and awareness
of the opportunities to be found in diversity. It seeks to contribute to the building of a
stronger sense of national identity and cultural unity within diversity.2
Global Youth includes a number of programs that aim to promote reconciliation among
diverse and potentially hostile groups both locally and in the region by fostering
communication around topics of common interest. Music workshops, community
gardening, cooking and cross-culture participation in games linking with local schools
and other regional exchanges are undertaken or planned. Overseas, we are developing an
ongoing connection between youth groups around the world. Currently there are three
groups involved in Kenya, India and Australia. Activities will include regular e-mails and
web-cam meetings.

Other projects associated with the Global Reconciliation Network include support for self
help groups that faciliatiate community based dialgues around the needs generated by the
HIV/AIDS epidemenic, trauma counselling and other health care programs in response to
the Indian ocean tsunami and cultural exchanges on the local and international levels.
Reconciliation is not a program. It is not limited to or directed towards a single endpoint,
or set of endpoints. It aims at a diverse communication, a proliferation of social and
cultural discourses. It refers to a process, of engagement, of disputation, of social
practice, that is consistent with many coexisting endpoints. It seeks to assist and support
other action for peace, disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation, sustainable development,
environmental preservation etc, in their individual quests, and to help them coordinate
their activities and broaden their scope.

In summary, there is a need for a rigorous and systematic process whereby dialogues and
other forms of community engagement are fostered at the core of all programs directed at
the preservation of peace and progressive social change. Such dialogues provide the
possibility both of grounding initiatives arising out of academic, scientific, legal,
diplomatic, legislative and administrative practices and of realising their key objectives
through direct, democratic communication with those who ultimately will be most
affected. In this sense, reconciliation must be built into the structure of society, not as an
additional or extraneous feature but as one of its essential presuppositions and premises.

Today marked both another birthday of mine and a banning by a EU bureucrat, as if I have less right to breathe in Europe than he or anyone else. Don't know how to sum that up in one post but here's a first go:

The value word somewhat confuses me when you conect it with organisational learning studies of emotional (trust, flow, intelligence, literacy, energy, current or currency etc)
To explore more deeply, you could google any of those pairs - eg value*emotional literacy or value*emotional intelligence value*trust trust*flow Then if you love Human KM (1) you might want to map human relations system (singular of plural) or human relationship system (singular of plural) or human relationships network or something that buxxes me like collaboration knowledge city

You also have our sig on Km and Emotional Intelligences, aborted from its editors at about 3 years young but still currently viewable at http://www.knowledgeboard.com/community/zones/sig/kmei.html

To communicate with Americans as needs be: What summary is useful in a David Letterman late night show format? I'll only attempt 5 conversation opening soundbites on why emotional intelligence is always more valuable than any numbers your thinking measures or that mesaure what you are permitted to think.

5 Though many people including myself feel trust is most central flow of valuation, I still have a hankering to always keep in minds eye the gods of community: faith, hope and love. Love is clearly what sustains context, community, mutual care, respect acrosscreed, race etc. I suspect faith and hope have deeper ancient meanings on life time competences and conflict resolutions than their sometimes diluted implications today. Perhaps love gravitates the contexts we choose to map systems of human relationships around and thereby explains what future exponentials compound around quality and sustaining transparency at boundaries between collaboration systems.

4 So why in the name of simplicity does Trust seem to be closest to value multiplcation. If the organisation of a context loses all trust, it will through time be pulled down, valueless. Andersen's addiction billions of business value + 0 societal value = billions didn't know society's lost trust would zeroise it because in a connecting system times over-rules plus (billions*0=0); tells you something that is sorely missing if all you measure performance by is tangibles.

3 The Dalai Lama engages emotionless economists with an argument that by not studying where fear lies in a community; their depressions also degrade any organisation's humanity. I think fear is used to control. Courage is needed to change, innovate, pass through conflict which is the greatestcommunal innovation of all if you believe open space facilitators. I am quite clear from personal discussions in 34 countries that most of the so-called Muslim-West strife circulates from fear caused by compounding economics of externalities so those who least understand a risk like that erected in Bhopal also get the most to suffer from it. That is a terrifying act of globalism because the compound consequences we all gettrapped in. Courage probably has openness too- been reading aboutmissionary work done by likes of David Livingstone. Odd how much of that still needs to be resurrected now (at least the Salvation army tells mesoon as leading team trainer in HIV affected communities around Africa)

2 I do like to love joy. It is the positive virus to unite us all. It turns up in deep flow. In fact, there is a measure developed by one of Peter Drucker's colleagues of how much of a lifetime is being used productively. By this measure that percentage of time being used to deepen experience of what you can most make a difference to is the most logical measure of compound personal productivity we are likely to come up with. It fits nicely with getting on exponential learning curves, which I believe we do when we are still growing with our time. It also fits this extraordinary comment onwhether we really understand the strategic juice made by Alfonso Lingis, and which a conference in Delhi is being congregated on in 2007; becauseIndian's view of community up economics is sustainably and diversely different from that controlled by those Bigs in the West who prefer to rule over diversity. "One always sees things in joy. Itseems to me that there is a very fundamental kind of existentialdecision we make: do we believe our joy or do we believe our neutralstates? In the latter case, the move is always one of prudence - not tomake decisions in a time of enthusiasm when one is carried away, butrather to wait until everything cools down. I think one of the mostimportant things there is - I would almost say one could make this akind of maxim for life - is to always make decisions in a state of joy.One should believe one's joy more than one's prudence, or any cautiousor fearful state of mind". - Alphonso Lingis."

1 The coming wars of goodwill and badwill networks will determine what globaliaation does to nature and yiour chuldren and mine. All positive emotional flows are correlated and attract each other; as do negative energies (I personally reserve some as in between - eg anger wakes me up to try to do something though (I don't want it to turnviciously into hate). Transparency, truth, fairness seem to beinfrastructural needs that underpin human systems as far as I can see. Mathematically they map intangibles valuation and strategic implementation as well as we'll ever need.http://intangibles-valuation.blogspot.com/ A map gives me confidence (and helps 360 degrees co-mentoring networks) that I am an equal participant with all who knowledge share its accuracyand that seek to ensure there are no professional silos or hidden agendas: (it supports visualization of networking connections, as well as simplifying all actions). A community or organisation without a see-through map is unlikely to systemically sustain context wherever that needs life.

News from our weblog of 30 years on Entrepreneurial Revolution

http://entrepreneurs.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.ey.com/GLOBAL/content.nsf/International/Media%5FRelease%5F%2D%5FWEOY%5F2003%5F%2D%5FWinner
June 2003
Indian businessman named World Entrepreneur Of The Year®
Third annual Ernst & Young event sees Narayana Murthy, head of Infosys Technologies, selected from field of 26 nominees.Monte Carlo, 7 June 2003--An Indian billionaire who started his software company 22 years ago with US$250 and who still lives in a modest apartment was this evening named Ernst & Young’s 2003 World Entrepreneur Of The Year (WEOY) at an award ceremony in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
Judges of the award praised Narayana Murthy’s “intellectually-, philosophically-, ethically- and spiritually-driven entrepreneurship” and his company’s “outstanding financial performance and global impact in a dynamic and volatile industry.”
Infosys Technologies Ltd provides end-to-end technology and consulting solutions to small and large corporations, and employs more than 10,000 people worldwide. It is a zero-debt company which regularly posts growth of 30 per cent per annum, and is listed on the Nasdaq with a market capitalization in the billions. Currently, 98 per cent of Infosys’s revenues are generated outside India.
The company’s corporate governance system is based on five concepts dating back to its inception: “the softest pillow is a clear conscience; when in doubt, disclose; don’t use corporate resources for personal use; put long-term interests ahead of short-term ones; and share wealth with employees.”
Mr Murthy believes strongly in corporate social responsibility, and has said that, beyond a certain point, personal wealth should be used to make a difference to society. He contributes a majority of his wealth to public causes.
Mr Murthy, who is based in Bangalore, was selected as the World Entrepreneur Of The Year from a field of 26 entrants - each of whom has been named Entrepreneur Of The Year (EOY) in national or regional programs run by Ernst & Young.
Collectively, the 26 finalists in this year’s WEOY awards program employ more than 76,000 people and represent approximately 6.5 billion euros in revenue.
Chairman of Ernst & Young, James S. Turley, said: “Mr Murthy’s story is a truly inspirational one. He has demonstrated quality leadership, and embodies both entrepreneurial spirit and business excellence. We are delighted he has been selected to receive this year’s award.”
A panel of 11 judges - each of whom is a past participant in the Entrepreneur Of The Year program in his or her country - chose Mr Murthy as the recipient of the award, based on written applications and meetings held throughout the course of the four-day event.
The WEOY program was established three years ago, and builds on Ernst & Young’s 17 years of success in running national EOY programs. The EOY award was begun by Ernst & Young in the United States in 1986 to recognize entrepreneurs who had created and sustained successful, growing business ventures. Since then, the program has grown throughout the world, expanding to six continents and more than 100 cities.
In 2002, Stefan Vilsmeier, founder and CEO of BrainLAB, headquartered in Germany, was named the World Entrepreneur Of The Year.

Changemakers.net has become the web-jam of preference for open source projects of the most exciting human kinds.
